Park history

1956

Work starts on sinking the first shaft for Cotgrave Colliery, on land previously used for agriculture

1963

Production of coal starts at the colliery. Miners would go on to turn out over a million tons per year for much of the pit's life

1993

All coal production stops, and the colliery is closed

1995

Nottinghamshire County Council with the British Coal Board develop a detailed plan to convert the former colliery site into a country park

2000

Cotgrave Country Park is opened

2011

Planning permission is granted for new housing at the centre of the old colliery site. Building of Hollygate Park is completed in 2018

2012

A new pond is built for dogs to enjoy, helping protect vulnerable wildlife in the park's other lakes and ponds

2020

The park becomes a vital place to enjoy outdoor space during the Covid-19 lockdowns

2021

The Friends of Cotgrave Country Park hold the first free Family Fun Day
